Sample Project: Evelyn Digital
Library
CS520, Fall 2005
Evelyn Digital Library is a research paper repository. Unlike similar
repositories such ACM Digital
Library and IEEE
Computer.org, the archiving,
categorizing, rating, and reviewing of the papers in Evelyn are
performed by users. In particular,
- A user may upload papers,
and the system will index the content of the papers to allow full-text
search.
- A user may edit the
bibliographical information of a paper. Like a wiki,
the system keeps a history of the editing so it is easy to revert
back to a previous
version.
- A user may tag
papers, which provides keyword
and categorical information.
- A user may rate and review
papers.
With involvement from the users, Evelyn can be much more effective than
traditional online paper repositories and indexes.
For instance, with tags, ratings, and reviews, it would be a lot easier
to find high quality papers on a specific topic. User behaviors and
input also open up the possibilities for various analysis, such as
identifying hot research areas and forecasting research trends.
Furthermore, Evelyn Digital Library will provide a number of services,
which include
- A RSS feed of newly added
titles.
- Email notifications based on
user preference and profile.
- A web service API for paper
search so it can be incorporated into other applications.
